A man by the name of John Moses Browning created a semi-automatic pistol in the first ten years of the 20th century that went on to become renowned. While innumerable other firearms have since been created, gained popularity, and then fallen out of favour, the 1911 is still produced in large quantities by a number of different manufacturers.

The U.S. government adopted Browning’s design, which is chambered in.45 ACP, as the Model of 1911; hence, the designation M1911. Colt’s Manufacturing Company won the first contract to produce M1911s, and despite the design’s age of more than a century, demand is still high.

Colt spent several years concentrating on completing its contract with the U.S. government to manufacture the M16 rifle and its numerous versions. However, the contract recently expired, leaving Colt with the opportunity to once again make more firearms for the general public. And when the number of states passing “must issue” concealed-weapon permit laws in recent years increased the market for compact handguns, Colt saw an opportunity and stepped up to the plate. It currently sells three compact weapons with a 1911-style design that are simple to carry.

The Protector

The Colt Defender looks like a slightly scaled-down version of Browning’s original, maintaining the same profile as the famous 1911 with a few small but significant changes. It can be discreetly carried in a pocket or hidden beneath a jacket or shirt. The compact profile of 1911-style handguns is particularly appealing since it lowers the possibility of printing through clothing and alerting criminals to your weaponry.

The Defender is offered in both the conventional.45 ACP and the 9mm calibre, the latter of which is better for a smaller gun due to its less recoil. And because 9mm ammunition’s stopping capability has increased so much in the past ten years, the smaller calibre is now a far more popular choice.

The Defender’s three-dot Novak Low Mount sights are identical to those found on a full-sized rifle, despite the gun’s small size. This is a huge benefit because a reduced sight radius makes using the sights even more important for striking the target. The gun has an extended thumb safety because it is compact and designed to be carried covertly. Instead, it has a 1911-style safety. But it still functions. The beavertail grip safety has an upswept tang in addition to a palm swell to ensure that the grip safety is disengaged when the shooter holds the gun, which is intended to prevent the shooter’s hand web from being cut or abraded by the reciprocating slide.

The single-action trigger features a Hogue rubber wrap-around grip with finger grooves and stippling to prevent slipping in damp hands. It also includes three lighting holes. Although the barrel is only 3 inches long, the magazine can still contain either seven or eight rounds of 9mm or.45 calibre ammunition. The slide is constructed of brushed stainless steel for strength and corrosion resistance, while the frame is built of aluminium that has been covered in Cerakote to save weight. The gun has a Series 80-style safety mechanism, which includes a firing pin block intended to stop the gun from discharging if dropped, to increase safety. The Defender is 6.75 inches long and 24 ounces in weight.

Fresh Agent

Colt’s New Agent is roughly the same size as the Defender. Although it is 6.75 inches long and almost the same weight, its sighting system is noticeably different. The New Agent’s sights are really not sights at all; they are made expressly for close-range firing and snag-free withdrawal from underneath clothing or out of a pocket. Colt added a black anodized aluminium receiver to keep the weight down, while the slide is made of blued carbon steel. Colt offers a double-action-only (DAO) variant without a thumb safety for people who find it unpleasant to carry a single-action weapon. The gun has a firing pin block in the Series 80 design, which increases safety by preventing the firing pin from striking the primer unless the trigger is pulled.
